5 things to know about distracted driving

On Behalf of | Nov 21, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Drivers can’t ever let distractions take their attention when they’re behind the wheel. Every distraction, no matter how short, is a chance for a crash that can lead to catastrophic injuries. An average of nine people die on this country’s roads each day due to distracted drivers.

All drivers should remember these five points about distracted driving.

#1: 3 types of distractions

There are three types of distractions that drivers can face. Visual distractions make you look at something other than the road. Cognitive distractions make you think about something other than driving. Manual distractions make you remove your hands from the steering wheel. Some distractions encompass more than one type of distraction.

#2: 5 seconds is too long

Even short distractions can lead to fatal crashes. Being distracted is the same as driving with your eyes closed. Your vehicle will move the length of a football field in just five seconds if you’re going 55 miles per hour. This leaves a considerable distance during which crashes can occur.

#3: Teens are at an increased risk

Around 9% of drivers who are 15 to 20 and involved in fatal crashes were distracted when the crash occurred. Emailing or texting while driving is more common among teens who are 18 or 19. The percentage of teen drivers who do this decreases for younger drivers.

#4: Experience doesn’t matter

Even experienced drivers shouldn’t allow distractions to affect them while they drive. No amount of driving experience can help a driver to react to something they don’t see. Instead, drivers should pay attention to the road and avoid multitasking. If something needs immediate attention, they can pull over to a safe place.

#5: Distracted driving crashes are preventable

One of the most troubling things about distracted driving crashes is that they’re all preventable. Drivers who are paying attention to the roadway can take evasive action when necessary. Because of this, distracted driving is considered negligent.

Victims of distracted driving wrecks can seek compensation for the damages related to the crash. This can help them to cover things like medical bills. Time limits are set by Indiana law so be sure to act quickly.
